Just after 9:30am, a fire started at Clear Café, an iconic restaurant on Jalan Hanoman.
In just 10 minutes, the fire destroyed the café and tore through the homes around it.
The families resident near the cafe have been deeply affected by the fire. In some cases families have lost everything - their house, motor bikes and possesions - and in others the family home was saved, but the sacred temple was destroyed.
In one case an elderly family member lost her personal possessions, accumulated over 60 years living in the family compound next to the site of Clear Cafe.
Without doubt, the saddest aspect of the damage has been the loss of the families' treasured temples. It has left these deeply religious people wondering how this happened and what to do next.
The early estimate of the financial cost of the fire to the community is around $200,000.
This is a cruel situation for these Balinese families that lack access to repair funding or pre-existing insurance policies.
The emotional and spiritual costs are being revealed quickly as these people that we have come to love so much over the years slowly pick through the rubble to claim precious mementos and salvage what they can.
The campaign funds will help the families that were affected by the fire to begin putting their homes and their lives back together.
