In 2006, Founder Micah List’s little cousin taught him to crochet. He went on to make himself a hat for the upcoming winter season. People commented on the style and quality of the hat and so he decided to started hand making and
selling hats to his family, friends, and community. The demand grew rapidly and he couldn’t handle it on his own.
From a young age Micah had been on mission trips and wanted to find a way to give opportunities to the villagers to better their circumstances. During one trip to the Dominican Republic he gave opportunities to 4 local artisans
to help produce his products.
Albania, Gregoria, Julie, and Marita often commented on how much they enjoyed working for TOK headwear and how thankful they were to make money that they wouldn’t have otherwise. As Micah went to college to study his passion in
business, he was unable to keep up with the work load and a business at the same time so the business was put on hold.
Micah decided to study abroad in Bangkok, Thailand the fall semester of His junior year. During this time he saw the injustices specifically in the sex trade that took place so prevalently in Thailand and realized the platform
that TOK Headwear could become to do something practical to bring healing and hope.
The purpose of this initial project is to kickstart the process of connecting with victims of the sex trade and to make products that we can sell to fund the continuation of this project in the future. For this initial project
we will have people donate their sewing and crocheting skills to produce the products until we can establish trusting relationships with aftercare homes. If we reach our total goal then we will produce a website where we can sell our products and also where
we can feature the artisans and their stories.
