Sea Stars of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
Meet Lloyd Godson or
BioSUB Man, as some prefer calling him. Creative, passionate and enthusiastic, the part futuristic scientist, part adventurer loves to live his wild ideas and put them to the test in the real world.
He built an
underwater habitat by welding two pieces of scrap sheet steel together and then lived in it at the bottom of a lake for 12 days utilising the world’s first underwater plant-based Life Support System. From
National Geographic Channel to ABC's
Creature Features, Lloyd’s amazing underwater experiments have made headlines all around the world. He's been
endorsed by several high-profile personalities, including the
Australian Ambassador to Greece and Sir Richard Branson, and he even has his own
theme song!
Inside his
BioSUB, Lloyd breathed oxygen produced by green algae, used a pedal-powered generator to create electricity and even recycled his own urine to feed the algae - all in the name of science. Take a listen to the BioSUB Project's
BioSong!
The Challenge
If you thought that was exciting, wait and see what he’s going to do next. Lloyd is on a mission to encourage young people to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) studies and careers, to conserve
Australia’s unique marine biodiversity and to lead an active and healthy lifestyle. In Sea Stars of STEM, Lloyd and his team of young Australian innovators will create the ultimate underwater superhero headquarters for
Tik and his fishy friend, Bubbles. And what better way to put their science to the test than for Tik to live underwater in the crazy creation when it’s finished?
That means building a home that can withstand the toughest conditions (hostile weather combined with the corrosive effects of the harsh ocean environment), that is self-sufficient in power and that recycles precious resources
like water and oxygen. Tik will also attempt to break Lloyd’s
Guinness World Records™ for the most electricity generated by pedalling underwater!
To complete his mission, Tik will need to generate enough energy to power his laptop and connect with students from around the world via the Internet. It’s going to be a huge challenge to host a live web chat from under the
sea!
Sea Stars of STEM is a way of tackling environmental issues such as climate change in a fun, provocative and scientific way. Lloyd and his team may be building a shelter in an uninhabited kingdom but it’s not about
survival. It’s about resourcefulness and good old Aussie ingenuity. It’s where adventure meets invention and science meets sustainability.
Let the challenge begin!
