The truth: The U.S. may incarcerate asylum seekers, innocent people fleeing persecution and violence, for years … until their court appeals are resolved. Adults and children live in detention because no one will sponsor them, take them in.
Three years ago, our small group of southern Vermonters decided to do something about this. We organized the Community Asylum Seekers Project, a non-profit founded to shelter these folks. After taking in our first asylum family, there came a new twist: we learned asylum children were being separated from their parents.
We stepped up our efforts.
It costs roughly $15,000 a year for us to shelter a small asylum family. Volunteers in our community – including educators, doctors, and lawyers – offer their help and representation. And last year when we reached out to you through StartSomeGood, we received enough in donations to support more families. Today, we are sheltering fourteen adults and children, individuals who would otherwise be living in overrun detention centers because they have no one in this country to help them. So, again, through StartSomeGood, we ask for your help. With your support we can …we will … do more.
Let's support those who simply ask for a chance to be safe.
