When Hurricane Sandy (or Superstorm Sandy or whatever you want to call her) came ashore in October of 2012, she did a pretty remarkable amount of damage. Most of it was in NYC and Jersey. Lesser known, was the damage done to Crisfield, Maryland.
Our Project
We want to encourage people to think beyond themselves and have a heart for serving others. We also want to help people who have been affected by disaster or just bad luck get a leg up. We believe society is stronger when the people in it are stronger.
To do this, we take teams of adults on short term mission trips and help rebuild homes after they have been damaged by natural disasters.
The River Bend Mission Team is going to Crisfield to help rebuild homes that were damaged or destroyed by Sandy. We chose Crisfield because of a lot of others haven't. NYC and New Jersey got a lot of attention and a lot of volunteers. Crisfield, not so
much.
We are leaving on October 12th and working for a week through UMCOR (The United Methodist Church's branch of relief work.) We don't know what we will be doing and won't know until we get there. It could be anything from mucking out basements to drywall/sheetrock
to roofing to finishing work.
Who We Are
Our team is twenty people from Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky,New York, and Louisiana. The age range of the volunteers is nineteen to seventy-something. We represent twelve different churches from four different denominations. It's very
rewarding to see such a diverse group come together to make a difference.
This is the River Bend Mission Team's 15th trip. Before this, we have done several service trips to Biloxi, MS, Gulfport, MS, Slidell, LA, and New Orleans, LA for Hurricane Katrina relief, and Minot ND, and Mason City, IA for flood relief. This is our
first trip to the East Coast. We are excited to be serving in a new area.
How You Can Help
Please donate generously, and share this campaign widely with your friends and family. With your help, we'll be able to fund our transportation and meals during the trip, purchase as many supplies as we can, and work to get the people of Crisfield back into
their homes.
