Help us build a gym!
For many schools, a gymnasium is where the school community comes together to cheer on the basketball team when they sink the winning shot. It’s where the students, teachers, staff, and parents build school
spirit at pep rallies and assemblies. It’s where students not only learn dodgeball, basketball, and volleyball skills, but how to live a healthy, active life.
But, the scholars at Chavez Prep Middle School, one of the highest-performing schools in the District, don’t have a gymnasium. Their gym class involves walking through back alleys to a public park, running
sprints in the teachers’ parking lot, and – on rainy and cold days – doing their best to turn a basement classroom into a fun place to play and learn.
That’s why we’re asking for
your help!
You can help provide a safe place where Chavez Prep scholars can learn and grow.
Your donation will give the
champion DC flag football team a place where family, friends, and teachers can root for the home team – at home.
Your donation will help create a gathering place where the entire school community can come together for the first time.
Your donation will help develop a healthier community by giving a home to the school’s unique and innovative Exercise and Nutrition Science course, which is combatting one of the greatest combined
challenges facing children today – poor diets and lack of activity.
Your donation will help build memories, just like the ones you cherish, for generations of Columbia Heights students to come.
The gym at Chavez Prep Middle School will be built upon a strong foundation of existing wellness, nutrition, and athletic programs, as well as high academic success. Chavez Prep is a Tier 1 School, which is
the highest performance rating given by the DC Public Charter School Board. Chavez Prep was also selected as the top middle school in DC and named winner of the 2012 Quality Schools Initiative by Fight for Children.
Community support is a key element of this initiative. Kids who know that their neighborhood is behind them know they’re part of a community that values, encourages – and puts resources toward – their success.
