The birthing kit addresses the 7 cleans needed for a safe delivery.
The kits are basic with 6 items. A plastic sheet, soap, 2 gloves, sterile scalpel blade, 3 cords and 5 gauze squares.
These items are assembled into a small bag at an Assembly Day.
The idea for the Birthing Kit Project originated with Dr Joy O’Hazy, a member of the Zonta Club of the Adelaide Hills. In 1995 at the 5th World Health Conference in Beijing, Joy heard Sally Field, the actor, speak on how these small kits that cost less than
a dollar can save a life. In 1999 the club turned an idea into a reality by organising the first assembly day, making the first 100 kits which were sent to PNG.
Zonta International Districts 23 & 24 (Australia) soon adopted this as their respective district projects, with kits soon being produced all over Australia. The Birthing Kit Foundation was formed as the project grew and grew. Zonta continues to support the
project with clubs all over the world now producing these kits. At Zonta International Convention in 2014 it was honoured as the best district project undertaken internationnally.
Our Zonta club is committed to producing 1000 birthing kits this month. We want to let our volunteers know that next year we can make 2000 kits. The components of the kits cost the club $3 each. We raise $3000 a year to fund kits and have the capacity to
make many more with our army of volunteers, so want to raise additional funds to help more women have a safe birth.
