Our Story
The idea for Your Tutor SF began in March of 2013, as Colette Johnson and business partner Cristina Munoz discussed the difficulties facing students today. Colette and Cristina bonded over a mutual respect for education and decided to start a company that
would work towards increasing the availability of local educational opportunities.
The Struggle
As a long time tutor and future teacher, Colette of Your Tutor SF was quick to realize that there is a high demand for quality tutors in San Francisco. This is largely due to ballooning class sizes in public school classrooms and limited resources for teachers
and students alike.
As in many sectors, low-income students are often among the hardest hit by negative statistics. California is below average in every subject on every single national assessment of educational progress, Grades
4-8, and research shows that student in urban areas drop out of high school at rates near 50%. These are troubling numbers, indicating a clear need for further academic support.
With 2.8 million students in the state eligible for free lunches (versus the 394,000 state average in most of the US) and with many students learning English for the first time ever, the state of California is in dire need of more people to help students,
both inside and outside the classroom.
The Solution
Fortunately, private tutoring and peer tutoring have both been shown to create enormous benefits for students at all levels on the learning spectrum.
The extensive list of benefits has been proven over the course of a number of research studies authored between 1970 and the present. Findings include: academic improvement; increased student engagement; social and behavioral skill-building; effectiveness
for varying learning levels; and positive attitudes towards school and learning.
In sum, private and peer-to-peer tutoring improve the overall learning environment in schools, increasing student experiences and outcomes.
Our Goal
Your Tutor SF is now dedicated towards increasing the number of students receiving academic and tutorial assistance, so that we may increase student knowledge and potential for success - academic and otherwise.
To help us get there, we have set up a scholarship fund that identifies low income students and families and offers the option for FREE year-long and sliding scale tutoring services from Your Tutor SF.
Our dream is to live in a world where every student has access to the educational resources that they need and deserve. Help us get there!
