Sun, Surf, Sand … and Trash
This is the reality of beaches in the Cape York Peninsula where remote beaches are littered with tonnes of consumer and commercial waste.
Everything from plastic bottles and rubber thongs, to gas cylinders and oil drums, can be found on these remote beaches, posing a significant danger to the rich marine wildlife of the Great Barrier Reef and Gulf of Carpentaria.
This rubbish is referred to as marine debris.
Over 6 million tonnes of marine debris enters the world's oceans
every year.
One million shorebirds and 100,000 marine animals die each year from plastic entanglement or ingestion. And now research reveals that marine debris also poses a health risk to humans, with plastic particles and toxins entering our food chain through the
seafood we eat.
The Trash Tribe
We recently visited the remote beaches of Cape York and we were
devastated.
We had never seen so much rubbish on a beach in Australia. We felt angry, disheartened and disappointed - disappointed that human consumption was destroying this beautiful environment.
We filled bag after bag with rubbish and were filled to capacity after only 150 metres on a single beach.
We needed more hands.
So the Trash Tribe was born.
The Trash Tribe campaign will take 10 young, creative and influential Australians to the Cape York Peninsula to do a massive clean up. A 10 day expedition to remove tonnes of rubbish from the marine environment for good.
Tangaroa Blue, coordinators of the Australian Marine Debris Database, will also be on board to lend their beach clean up and data collection expertise.
But the campaign doesn't end once the Trash Tribe returns home.
Each of the 10 Trash Tribe participants will create their own unique campaign to share their clean up experience and raise awareness of marine debris. They will utilise their existing talents and expertise to communicate with their networks in a
creative way.
Instead of one national campaign, the Trash Tribe will produce
ten campaigns each with the ability to speak to a different area of Australian society.
We want all of Australia to hear about marine debris and learn how they can help be a part of the solution.
Who is the Trash Tribe?
If we reach our goal fundraising amount, we will open an
application round for the Trash Tribe project.
We will be looking for young people with creative talents, a passion for ocean conservation and a strong network. Think artists, fashion designers, students, environmentalists... we want the Trash Tribe to represent a broad cross-section of Australian society,
so that they can take their message back to their respective communities.
By creating ten campaigns we are ensuring that all Australians, no matter their interests or lifestyle, will be engaged and informed by at least one of the campaigns.
