Can plastic pollution be featured as an educative event that is fun, catchy and full of positive spirit? Can art and music be “change agents”?
The answer is “yes”; as we did it already! In June 2015, “TrashStock Festival – Musik, Artistik, Plastik” became the evidence that all of the above was true. Thus, the success of the first edition led the team to join forces and organize the second one!
What is TrashStock Festival about?
TrashStock Festival aims to nurture a movement of creative individuals who want to protect the beautiful, but endangered island of Bali.
We believe that art, music and social entrepreneurship have an amazing power. We believe that creative minds have a lot to offer to make a change. TrashStock gives them a chance to exhibit those talents.
“We are making history!” (Made Bayak, Platicology Artist)
“I want to be part of any positive movement like TrashStock. This is the way that I care.” (Robi ‘Navicula’, Musician and Activist)
TrashStock is a premier youth-led art and music festival which celebrates our love towards Bali’s environment in the most creative way. We present the festival by leveraging visual artists, music talents and entrepreneurs to tackle the dramatic plastic trash issue that Bali, like many places in the world, has been facing for many years.
We perform the difficult art of being fun, beautiful and positive while advocating about a tragic and ugly issue.

We promote creativity and we are creative too! For TrashStock 2015, our stage was made of pallet used to transport cargo, made out of 100% recycled plastic! Our “Wall of Messages” was made of rice bags sewn together! And the event’s sign at the gate? All TrashStock letters were made out of plastic, of course!
We do it the fun way, but it’s sure not about fun.
We all love Bali and its unique culture, spiritual energy and amazing landscapes. Sadly, it has suffered from uncontrollable growth. New forms of packages made of plastic have replaced banana leaves, but there is no real waste management system and education about the issue of plastic pollution. As a result, it is extremely sad to see this plastic trash everywhere and being burned like if it was still banana leaves.
A study revealed that the world’s oceans will be filled with more plastic mass than fish mass by (Time, Jan 2016) and Indonesia is the second largest contributor! Bali is an island with many rivers that trash end up in the ocean. In other words, we are definitely in the right place to take action.
What will exactly be TrashStock doing:
On July 16-17, 2016, TrashStock Festival will bring together more than 40 artists, musicians, entrepreneurs and organizations to create networks, exchange information and discuss all the possibilities to tackle the plastic issue. This event will be the meeting point among young people, environmentalists as well as creative entrepreneurs and organizations who care about the problems of plastic waste.
“Earlier I saw some things that are potential for creative economy and most importantly, I saw the educative value. I think creativity and education really go together.” (Ida Bagus Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra – Mayor of Denpasar)

Art & Crafts
We will create an amazing exhibition of art that is either inspired by plastic or using it as the main component of the art piece. Painting, dresses, photography, bags, we have it all!

Bali has a worldwide reputation for the quality of its handcrafting. Some of the talents have decided to use their skills to recycle plastic. We will offer them to display and sell their upcycled products.
Music concert:
We will invite bands who both believe in a better future for the island, and who are able to reach a large crowd of fans, who have a concern about the environment, who who even created songs about plastic before, or specifically for the event;
All will be asked to voice their concerns about the plastic issue before starting their sets, which means there will be educational messages before the guests enjoy every performance.
Environmental speeches:
Between each performance, NGO’s, artists and partners will give educational speeches, making sure that the guests understand the issue along with the entertainment that they enjoy.
We will also show videos and have talks about plastic during the day
“At TrashStock, I was so happy to share with children how to keep our environment clean from plastic.” (Ayu Cakra, Volunteer from Udayana University)
Kids’ activities:
We will offer various activities throughout the two days involving educative workshops to create art with plastic.
The activities include colouring on plastic, craft making from reusable waste (crafty-upcycling), and self-illustrating of tote bags.
We also provide an outdoor library of a selection of books about nature.
Fundraising for what we believe in.
We aim to raise funds during the festival itself as well. This way, we will educate the youth and give right back to those who do amazing work.
This year, we will donate the profits of the event to IDEP foundation and their comic book project. 132 schools will receive a comic book about general ecology and the effects of trash dumped in rivers:. http://idepfoundation.org/
We will also support an independant artist name Budi Susila, who recycle plastic into amazing artwork and objects such as lamps, brooms cups, grocery bags, etc. He goes in schools to teach kids how to upcycle plastic. Amazing human being.
