Social injustices deeply impact many communities in the US, and I've always wanted to do more to help. When i first saw this photograph taken by Toyo Miyatake, I knew I wanted to help amplify his voice. Toyo Miyatake was a Japenese American photographer who documented Japanese American Internment during WWII. He photographed in secret while being imprisoned at Manzanar, using film that was being smuggled into the camp.
My goal of $200 will be used to pay for the rights to sell limited edition shirts--in collaboration with Toyo Miyatake Studio--one shirt for the Studio, and the costs of providing rewards for qualifying contributors. My stretch goal will be used to purchase additional shirts as inventory, for local sale and sale at social justice events.
A small portion of the proceeds for every shirt sale will go to Toyo Miyatake Studio. The remainder of the proceeds will go to The Manzanar Committee. Here is their mission statement: "The Manzanar Committee is dedicated to educating and raising public awareness about the incarceration and violation of civil rights of persons of Japanese ancestry during World War II, and to the continuing struggle of all peoples when Constitutional rights are in danger."
