Our Story
Komenda’s economic and development issues are many. To begin solving them, we need to cultivate a large initiative beginning with the townspeople; develop nationwide public-private partnerships, establish concrete systems and infrastructure, and access to an enormous amount of funds. As the saying goes “little drops of water make a mighty ocean”. With this wisdom, we have chosen to narrow our focus to creating solutions that will cater to the development of the youngest members of its society. As with any society looking to improve itself, education is key.
The people of Komenda are fishing and farming folk. However, these opportunities do not bring a steady source of income and have gradually declined over the years. In order for Komenda to improve, it needs educated individuals who can tap into newer industries. The very few who reach higher education levels, end up leaving the town for the city. All that remains of the town are the retired and old and the younger children left behind by parents working in the city to make ends meet. A society no matter how developed, can sustain itself this way.
Our aim and goal is to create an impact in the lives of the children of Komenda and instill positive sustainable socio economic change in the community.
About the Komenda Project
The Komenda Project is a social innovation project, aimed at instilling positive sustainable socio economic change, with an intent to impact the lives of the people in Africa. Our vision is to create sustainable development by building the next wave of innovators and problem solvers to create opportunities and empower our communities. This will be achieved by introducing innovative education programs, providing access to financial and training resources to enable individuals to maximize their full potential. We hope to impact Komenda in a very positive way and by doing this, we prepare the next generation of Komenda for a successful future.
The Problem
- Komenda is a remote town located in the Central Region of Ghana.
- The people of Komenda have limited access to education, provided to them in poor and deteriorating infrastructure.
- Students who graduate from school lack access to career opportunities and jobs with stable income.
- Although surrounding cities have made notable improvements to their living, however, Komenda has stagnated and retrogressed in its development.
Addressing the Problem
- Through student aid, the children will receive notebooks, stationery, school bags and shoes to provide them quality education and improved learning facilities.
- Through the reading club, literacy levels will be improved and students will find exciting ways to get resources to improve their learning experience.
- Through our mentorship program, students will learn about a number of career opportunities they have not previously been exposed to and have a role model who will guide them to become successful in their career paths.
- Through our tech workshops, students will learn hands on skills within the tech sector which will provide an avenue for them to select tech programs in colleges and pursue this as a career option.
Why This Project Matters
The Komenda Project is unique because the driving force is sustainability. We are not focussed on the short term results, but rather the long term impact to pave the way for self sufficiency and talent development.
Long Term Impact of The Komenda Project
- Reduced rate of student drop out and teenage pregnancy - students will be more engaged in school and encouraged to attend class
- Increased literacy levels - students will have access to quality education and improved learning environments
- Exposure to opportunities in the technology industry - students will discover the untapped flourishing industry of technology
- Career guidance - strong support system to guide students to their desired career path
These long term impacts will establish and secure stable sources of income, enhance the quality of life and in turn create a self sustaining future.
