My Story
My name is
Stella Canfield and I am here today to ask for your help to end discrimination ... poverty ... and despair in the struggling democracy of Bulgaria.
33 years ago I illegally crossed three international borders with my two small children to escape the communist regime there. We eventually emigrated to America and a better life.
Bulgaria is now a democracy ... but political change has not solved all problems in Eastern Europe. Visiting the country of my birth, I saw appalling conditions in orphanages...crystallizing a need...a way I could help see that children lacking parental support
could have a future. Without love, care and education, I knew that their destiny would be a cruel life on the streets ... endangering themselves and society.
So I established the
Stellar Arts Foundation and since 2001 have been working to raise funds to support orphans and disadvantaged children in Bulgaria.
Our initial and ongoing projects
Our initial projects have assisted children in the orphanage in the village of Barzitsa, where my husband and I live six months of the year. One of our success stories is a boy we have supported
for five years ... who graduates from secondary school this year.
Now orphanages are closing in conformance with European Union policies ... sending the children to foster homes that often lack the means to provide shoes, books and transportation so they can complete
their schooling. With your help, though, we can overcome these obstacles for some of those children and youths.
Our Current Project and Why it matters
Today we are working to support a hardworking, young
Roma family with a small child...a family which can be a role model for similarly challenged young people. They are desperately trying to break the cycle of poverty in which they and many of the Roma families throughout Europe are trapped…a situation rife
with discrimination, poverty and crime.
How You Can Help
It will take just $15,000 to buy a modest house, and fund vocational training for 21-year-old Hasan, so he can support his family. To be clear, we are not giving him a gift from the sky! The home
needs work, which Hasan, his wife and other villagers will undertake to make it livable. His direct participation will instill appreciation for your support.
Mother Teresa said “If we cannot feed hundreds let’s feed one.” In that spirit, our current project is specific and has an achievable goal.
