It has always been our mission at the Nolulamo foundation to protect children who are in danger, exploited or neglected. We believe every child deserves a future, an opportunity to learn and be protected.
The Soweto shelter and classrooms aims to educate and protect 62 abandoned children in Soweto Johannesburg. There is currently a building but no funds to complete the interior fit out, including plastering, painting, bathrooms, toilets, desks, and cupboardAs founder of the Nolulamo foundation we seek a vision for a better world for 62 abandoned children in Soweto Johannesburg, we are seeking to educate them, protect them and provide them with shelter and food.
Our aim is to protect those children that are in danger, exploited or
neglected. The economic condition of the people that live here is
deplorable. They are marginal labourers’ dependent on the mercy of
nature and often discard their children.
This all began when a young Sister was walking in the street in Doornkop Soweto, she noticed a commotion in front of her which was group of young children fighting over a banana, they were between the ages of 4 and 6 years old. On approach the Sister walked up to them and asked what the matter was? They responded “we are hungry, and our friend doesn’t want to share his banana” which really disturbed her. She offered to buy them all bananas and bought more than required because she noticed the hunger in their eyes and the excitement when she said “I will buy you more bananas if you stop fighting”.
She walked with boys back to her dwelling and asked them where their parents were, one boy responded “I don’t know I stay with my father” and the other boy said “my parents died and I stay with my grandparents”.
Sister lulu started caring for these boys and more children were coming and she provided food for them. As the local community knew of Sr Lulu work people would drop their children by her gate so she can give them food.
From that moment she worked so that no child goes hungry where she lived. She wanted restore hope in my community and give a place of hope.
Through various donations she has received from good Samaritans, who were Fr. Collins, Mother Francina and Fr. Nhlanhla who helped in the construction of the building.
There are now 62 children that she cares for and would dearly like to finish the shelter and classrooms. Ideally, she would really love to put a playground for them and a small library.
We believe with your help we can take children at a time of crisis and transform their lives through early childhood care, health nutrition, education and their protection.
The school has three teachers Andele, Zanele and Obiageri with strong support by Nwabisa who provides the childrens meals and Buhle who provides all the maintenance.
When we started Nolulamo foundation, we wanted to make a long-term difference for children that had been abandoned, they had parents that could no longer look after them let alone provide them with an education.
We want to provide these children with nutritious meals, education, and a safe place to live. These young children are the most vulnerable community members. Please help me complete my project.
If you wish please help us look after these vulnerable children.
We want to thank you all for your support in this these unprecedented times and hope that you bring a smile to my children
