Our Story
MY Generation is a youth ran organization that embraces the collaboration between youth of color and their circle of support. Founded in 2013 by three Black foster youth, MY Generation emerged to motivate, educate, and connect youth of color that are subject to the child welfare system. MY Generation works closely with youth of color to radically improve the child welfare system by connecting them to organizations and providing them with training that can better serve them and their communities. Our vision is that youth of color will be the leaders and driving force changing the child welfare system and creating pathways for this generation and generations to come.
What We Do
MY Generation’s offerings include workshops for child welfare professionals, community information meetings which include trauma informed workshops, and youth consultant positions with child welfare nonprofits, as well as our foster care prom that takes place every other year.
Our Project
MY Generation has had a busy fall and winter, and now we're gearing up for summer! Please help us complete our summer initiatives by contributing to MY Generation’s Summer 2017 Foster Care Fundraiser. Your generosity and dedication have allowed us to become one of the most active and successful youth lead child welfare organization in Minnesota. Thank you!
Last summer, MY Generation, and allies started working on our proposal for Minnesota’s foster care bill of rights to pressure the Department of Human Services (DHS) to create a more inclusive bill of rights for youth in foster care. We're happy to announce that our initiative has sparked conversation with DHS to pursue a foster care bill of rights for foster children in Minnesota. MY Generation remains committed to making sure that all children in the child welfare system have a home that they can hold accountable, a circle of support that will be there for them, and transition plan that can help them age of out of the system successfully.
Additionally, MY Generation has provided resources and aid to child welfare professionals and youth of color in the child welfare system who are having difficulties navigating the traumatic roller coaster that they face in the system. And our foster care panels and trauma informed workshops continue to be a success. That would not have been possible without your support.
In the coming months, MY Generation is curating mental health workshop plans for youth of color with the help of youth currently in residential treatment facilities (youth prisons). We are currently planning our first foster care graduation party as well as our first foster care awareness banquet, which educates community members about the foster care to prison pipeline. We'll also be sending representatives to the 22nd Annual Tomorrow's Leaders Today (TLT) Youth Leadership Conference to connect with other youth in the child welfare system.
