Our Story
Brevard County Florida is one of the most ecologically diverse ares within the United States. It is also one of the most economically diverse areas in Florida with 65% of the population living at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level, driving food insecurity
issues that affect nutrition, health, and children's accademics.
The Mobile Grocer is a new nonprofit startup modeled after another well known and successful nonprofit
organization in St. Paul, MN.
The Mission of The Mobile Grocer is to fight food insecurity and hunger by providing improved access to fresh foods by bringing the store to the community door.
Our Objective is to increase access to fresh, nutritious foods in communities that experience high levels of food insecurity or are otherwise limited in transportation with dignity; and our Vision is expand operations to cities across America, starting with
our community in South Brevard County.
Our Project
The Mobile Grocer is currently working with leading community sponsors to help raise funds to meet organizational needs and improve awareness of our mission.
Today, we are currently in a development phase and are rasing funds to acquire and remodel our first bus and plan to have it in operation by the beginning of 2016.
Why It Matters
1 in 6 Americans suffer from food insecurity and resulting hunger, meaning this affects at least one of our friends, employees, family, neighbor or someone else we know directly. This includes 1 in 5 children and 1 in 4 seniors in our county that suffer
from moderate to severe food insecurity.
Numerically speaking this translates to over 87,000 people of the more than half million living in Brevard County that suffer from some level of food insecurity.
This is a community problem. It affects so many people that you probably know someone who suffers from food insecurity.
The operating assumptions include six daily stops, six days a week, serving an average of 18 people per stop for a total of 67,392 served per year.
Our Budget
The total capitalization budget for The Mobile Grocer is $75,000, but our total campaign goal to support our initial goal of acquiring our first bus is $30,000 of which your participation at any level would help make this possible. We would be successful
with the purchase of our first bus when we raise $20,000, but need to consider the cost of remodelling to include removal of all unnecessary seats and hardware and replace it with shelving, racks, counter space and paint.
