My ALP Story
Joined in March 1972 (Paddington Branch), I had already been working on the campaign in late 1971 in support of Percy Allen who was the first ALP candidate to stand in Wentworth against the Attorney General Les Bury MHR and was, at the time a member of the
Left Steering committee with Dulcie Kite. Although we knew we would never win the seat we were determined to run a strong campaign which was supported by Neville Wran who was the official Campaign Director.
I Attended Gough Whitlam’s Campaign Launch at Blacktown Civic Centre. A moment in history that changed my life. In October 1972, rather than having a 21st birthday party, I had a fundraiser for Allen’s campaign that was attended by key left wing unions,
Lionel Murphy, Diamond Jim McLelland, Jim Spigelman and many other notable Labour luminaries; a very proud moment in my life.
I have worked on various Campaigns in my early ALP days, going wherever I was needed during 1972, 1974 and 1975.
In the late 70s, my membership lapsed due to personal circumstances. However, by 1982 I had rejoined the Pyrmont Ultimo Branch where I first met John Faulkner. I maintained my membership again for several years. However, another major life change distracted
me and I did not rejoin again until 1995. Since that time, I have had continuity in my membership.
