Why Are We Doing It?
The impact of covid-19 on the local initiatives support decrease significantly. The government budget is focused on the health sector. The SDG campaigns lose their primary source income and rely on people's help. On the other hand, over 75% of the SDG’s initiators in Indonesia are technology illiterate. They don’t know how to create a touching storyline for their campaign that will make people interested to donate.
The lack of budget support from the Government caused the SDG’s initiatives, especially in their initial stage, to be self-funded. We have been trying to help them with alternative funding sources by uploading the campaigns through crowdfunding platforms that are not SDG-friendly and resulting in a very disappointing result on the target goal of the fund. We need financial support to help them to develop their initiatives.

All of us are the awardee of the Australia Award in Sustainable Tourism 2019, under the supervision of Prof. Noel Scott and Prof. Bill Carter from Griffith University Australia. At first, each of us was designed to do an individual project. But we found so many similarities and decided to create a group project together. That is how we come up with the name BETTER TOGETHER INDONESIA FOUNDATION. The Australia Award helps us with networking and assistance every time we need it.
How You Can Help.
We are so grateful for your support. As a reward, we will invite you to our webinar (free) related to mangrove plantation, reporting the update of the project through this website and also publishing your name/company logo on our social media (Youtube, IG, FB).
Our Campaign.
A mangrove is a shrub or small tree that grows in coastal saline or brackish water. Mangroves are an essential component of the coastal ecosystem. They are an important part of estuarine food webs, a habitat/ secure breading place to species as fish, reptiles, amphibians, turtles, and even monkeys. They are essential to fight erosion, storm surge, and tsunamis. Due to the current change in climate, the conservation of mangroves becomes importance.
Mertak Village, located in Pujut District, Central Lombok Regency, Indonesia, has an enormous potential to develop into a leading tourist destination. It has a very wide beach that covers almost 30% of the total beach in the Regency. Beautiful view, white sand, surfing, diving, snorkeling spots, seaweed farming, and also large mangrove forests on the shoreline, are several options available. One of them is Batu Berang beach, about two kilometers from the Tunak Mountain Conservation Forest. This village was also known as the buffer zone considering its bold mangrove ecosystem.
The success of mangroves planting depends very much on the size of the plant, immature plants have a high risk of not surviving the first year. BINA BAHARI, a community group founded by Better Together Indonesia Foundation, will therefore build the infrastructure for mangrove nurseries. This community group aims to fight the mangrove illegal logging, educate people and also recover the mangrove ecosystem.
During 2019-2020, they have planted over 2.500 mangroves and end up in failure, mostly caused by immature trees. Nursery mangrove is needed to carried out since there are only a few trees/fruits around the planting site. The existence of a nursery will be beneficial, especially if the planting is carried out during the peak season. In addition, planting through seeded fruit will produce a high percentage of growth. Seedlings to be planted must be available one day before planting.
As a start, they have prepared a 0,6 hectares area for the seedling which estimated could produce 3.000 seeds per six months (Rhizopora sp). They need at least €50.000 to build the basic infrastructures for the seedling area consist of: seedling house made of aluminum frame, para net (shade net), and polybag nursery bag. Your donation will be implemented in 3 months of construction work and we will update the progress every week through this website.
The next milestone of this campaign is not just about Environment but also Education and Economy (3E). We have a plan to develop a mangrove tracking as an integrated part of the nursery so the tourist could visit the location while creating a positive impact on the environment. Involving tourists in the environmental act will give a multiplier effect to people's awareness.
We believe that the world needs to be saved. We don’t have to engage in heroic action to participate in the process of change. The small initiative, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.
