320 children go to school at Hopeland Junior School, Kitoola. From around 7am-5pm, 6 days a week and sadly only receive a small cup of porridge (maize, water and sugar) for recess and lunch.
YOFAFO want to feed these children, most who are orphans or living in a very poor household, living on $1 a day. Our plan is to offer a nutritious breakfast and lunch program to 100% of all vulnerable children at school and eventually become
a model in the community.
In Uganda they lose up to $899 million due to malnutrition each year.
With over 975,000 children under the age of five experiencing cases of anemia, acute diarrhoea sydrome, acute respiratory infection, and in some cases fevers, all due to poor nutrition. Along with this, students who are malnourished as children have
reduced cognitive capacity and are therefore more likely to repeat grades at school.
If we understand that education is the key to empowering people and breaking the cycle of poverty, conquering malnutrition is a vital part in giving these wonderful students
their opportunity to shine.
We don't believe it is okay to have these stats when we live in a society with excesses food and luxuries... lucky there's lots we can do, we just need to start!
