About This Project

Kijani Youth Initiative Inc. works with youth groups in Nairobi, Kenya to develop small, sustainable enterprises by providing them with mentoring, training, and startup capital.

Since 2010, Kijani has facilitated the launch of six successful businesses, helping over 400 people to better their lives, family's wellbeing, and communities. As a 100% student-run, volunteer organisation, we think that is a pretty spectacular achievement.

Our successful businesses, past and present, include:

  • Greenhouse and water well to provide food and water to the community
  • Social enterprise telecommunications business to fund a mentoring program for young girls to navigate womanhood and avoid sexual violence
  • Rubbish collection and clean-up service
  • Installed clean water tank, shower and tap with drinking water for the community
  • Car cleaning service
  • Closed loop chicken farm agribusiness

We've relied on the passionate work of 30 young, student volunteers in Australia to fund these incredible projects. Much to our bittersweet sentiments, Kijani has reached a size where it can no longer be supported by volunteer efforts alone, yet we lack the financial capacity to maintain paid positions.

After six wonderful years of operation, we're devastated to be closing our doors.

We need you - we're calling out to help us leave our Kenyan beneficiaries in the best position possible so they're able to combat the effects of poverty and the harsh prospects of life in Nairobi's most overpopulated slums. Our beneficiaries include two spectacular, hard-working, and dedicated mentors, along with our beloved six youth groups consisting of approximately 20 people each.

Use Of Funds

$3,810 Tipping Point Goal

Mentor Wages ($1,500)

  • Our mentors are two intelligent, well-connected, and determined Kenyans, John and Alex (featured in image)
  • The above amount will cover mentoring for the months of August, September, and October ($500 per month - wages are $250 per month for each mentor)
  • The mentors provide business expertise and guidance to our youth groups to ensure their ventures are successful and well-informed

Youth Group Funding - H-Town ($1,000)

  • One of our youth groups, H-Town, consists of a group of strong,
    determined young ladies. The ladies started a mentoring program which helps school girls
    and boys in Nairobi to learn valuable life and business skills, get them off
    the streets, and empower their futures
  • They have also developed a small telecommunications business to fund their mentoring program like a social enterprise
  • This business needs a storefront on a well-traveled road, which costs $525
  • Additions for the store include a coffee machine and vending machine, to create a welcoming atmosphere for customers, costing $375

Youth Group Funding - Rubies ($275)

  • Our second youth group, the Rubies, are ready to launch their agribusiness project - a greenhouse and water well, where they will sell food and water to their community at a reasonable rate
  • We recently ran a crowdfunding campaign on their behalf to help raise the last $1,115 dollars to finish the well and carry out repairs caused by climate impacts
  • These girls need just $275 to punch through the last few feet of hard mud in their well

Mentor School Fees ($635)

  • Kijani has been paying school fees for our mentor, John, to receive an elevated high school degree
  • John has 15 months left of school (at $33 per month)
  • He has been doing great in his studies and is set to take exams, which will cost an additional $140
  • Help John to reach his goal and to have a degree that will enable him to find great jobs in the future!

Farewell Items ($400)

Kijani would like to pay a final bonus of $200 to each of our mentors, to help cover their living expenses while searching for new jobs, which will be required due to the closing of our organisation (totaling $400).

$4,810 Stretch Goal

Kijani would love the opportunity to invest additional funds into several past businesses, to enable our community of youth groups to expand their horizons even further!

Just $1,000 can go a very long, long way in Kenya, especially when put in the hands of our youth groups, who have already proven their determination to thrive.

These projects include:

  • Rubbish collection and clean-up service
  • Installed clean water tank, shower and tap with drinking water for the community
  • Car cleaning service
  • Closed loop chicken farm agribusiness
