Our Mission:
Gadens Symfoni - or in English 'Symphony of the Street' - started as a nonprofit in January 2016 to bring classical chamber music to the homeless shelter 'Hørhuset' in Copenhagen, Denmark. Some of Denmarks best chamber music ensembles are invited to perform for the residents at the shelter, and the musicians receive no fee for performing. So far, we have had two performances: One by the Royal Danish Brass and one with opera soloists from the Danish National Opera. And many more ensembles have expressed their enthusiasm for this project! Future performances will include the Middle East Peace Orchestra, the Piazzolla Orchestra, the Carl Nielsen Quintet and the Danish String Quartet.
Our Project:
Gadens Symfoni wants to give the performing musicians the best possible conditions for performing. Therefor the funds will specifically be used for things such as:
- Regular tuning of our piano.
- Purchase of music stands.
- Transport of larger instruments.
- Appreciation gifts for the performing musicians.
- Any smaller unforeseen expenses related to the concerts.
- Transporting homeless from other shelters in Copenhagen to the concerts and thereby gradually expanding the project.
Why It Matters:
In Denmark, there are around 6.000 homeless and the number is increasing. Homeless people in Denmark are easily neglected, since Denmark generally has a well functioning social security system. But many homeless individuals suffer addiction problems, suffer from mental illnesses or derive from poor social conditions. Some do actually have a place to live, but cannot stay there due to their mental illness or addiction problems. In other words, being homeless in a country like Denmark, covers more complicated aspects than simply not having a place to live - it is also about not having a home or a place that feels like home. It becomes a state of being an alien in your own life, and at some point, you realise that words doesn't matter anymore.
But when words cease to matter, music starts. Music creates a path to finding the things that we forgot that we could feel. Music helps us to overcome problems by showing us a path to recall, feel, listen, see, learn and be together in silence.
Music is an important human right - especially for the homeless.
