Try to remember...
The last time you went to a city park with your family and, in one afternoon, dressed up in colorful costumes, listened to a live band play, made your own tutu, played lifesized foosball, learned acroyoga, took a story telling workshop, walked through a
giant caterpillar sculpture, sang in an open mic, and danced until your feet hurt?
If you were at FIGMENT DC in September 2014, you'd have done all of it!
On September 26 and 27, 2015, FIGMENT DC seeks to return to the beautiful riverfront park space in Anacostia Park.
We need YOU to help us make it a reality!
What is FIGMENT?
FIGMENT DC
is an outdoor interactive art and music festival in a public park where everything is free and you can play with all the art. Yes, you read that right!
Entirely organized by volunteers, FIGMENT teaches participants to change the boundaries of art and what it means to be an artist. It's an opportunity for ALL members of the community to not just look at and admire art, but to PLAY with and CREATE art together.
In 2013 FIGMENT DC found a new home "East of the River" at Anacostia Park and we're thrilled to return for a third year. On September 26 and 27, 2015 we plan to once again inhabit the beautiful riverfront park space around the Anacostia Park Skating Pavillion.
The first
FIGMENT happened on Governor's Island in New York City the summer of 2007. Since then it has expanded to a dozen cities around the world from New York to San Diego to Toronto and even Geelong, Australia. Each event is organized by a team of local volunteers
who come together to help bring the magic of FIGMENT to their city.
FIGMENT is guided by 11 Principles, among them Self-Expression, Gifting, Decommodification and Gratitude. Towards that end, FIGMENT DC is a leave no trace event and together we work to leave Anacostia Park cleaner and more beautiful each year.
Why FIGMENT?
FIGMENT aims to break down barriers to make art accessible to the community, and provide an alternative to a society increasingly influenced by commercialism and corporate branding. Learn
more.
Participants are encouraged to step away from the sidelines to actively take part in the artistic process. Have a project you've been thinking about for years? Bring it to FIGMENT and share your imagination with others.
Unlike visiting a museum or traditional arts festival, at FIGMENT everyone has an opportunity to actively be a part of the artistic process. In past years, participants have created art from trash, decorated a field with hundreds of pinwheels, jumped on
a pirate ship, cruised on a giant tricycle, written love letters for strangers, shared poetry and music, flew through the air with acro yogis, collaborated in the construction of an abstract sculpture made of recycled wood and, perhaps most importantly, learned
to unleash their inner artist as they shared their talents with others.
FIGMENT exists to share imagination and invention between artists and the public. You can learn more about the philosophy behind FIGMENT here.
Our Campaign
FIGMENT DC is free to the public, volunteer managed, and does not accept any corporate sponsorhip. We don't sell tickets or charge anyone to participate! FIGMENT is free for everyone and all the art and music is a gift to the community.
Well.... except that there are few pesky charges that we still need to cover. And that's why we're asking for your support.
Boring things like insurance ($1500); police, National Park Service staff, and overnight security ($3400) and lots of other little things cost money. Our $7,000 tipping point reflects the bare minimum we need to raise to bring FIGMENT DC back to Anacostia
Park in 2015. This is an all-or-nothing level, so reaching this goal will ensure FIGMENT DC will happen, albeit sans a rented stage and sound equipment. If we do not reach at least this goal, FIGMENT will not receive any donations pledged
through this campaign.
Through your tax deductible donation, you can help us demonstrate that we have the community support we need.
During our
2014 crowdfunding campaign, we raised $8,500 from generous donors. If you believe in FIGMENT and the postive impact that such an event can have on the community, please support us today!
Please spread the word about FIGMENT to your friends and family. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate!
