The Compost Ninjas have been secretly developing a plan to change the way we eat and save the world. A modest goal, but nevertheless, they need your help.
If you believe that food is tastiest when it is eaten fresh; if you believe that we all should have access to locally grown food, regardless of our housing situation; if you believe that the best tasting food is seasonal food then, good news, you’re in!
Support our work by purchasing an attractive crate garden (or 2, or 3…) bursting with a selection of edible plants.
Our Humble Beginnings:
For 6 months we collected food waste from our school and homes and cafes in our local community and turned this into rich, crumbly, sweet smelling compost. With phase one complete we moved on to phase two: designing and making the perfect modular urban garden:
portable, lightweight, self-watering, self-contained and made out of recycled and upcycled materials.
After extensive testing the Compost Ninjas confirmed that these milk crate gardens grow healthy, organic, nutrient dense food in any small space with access to sunlight. Also, they look pretty cool.
$5,000 Tipping Point Goal
Our Not-So-Humble Ambitions:
Our ultimate goal is to create a large crate garden (at least 200 crates) that mainly lives at school and periodically travels to out into our community to share our produce, knowledge and enthusiasm. We have teams of Compost Ninjas ready to set up ‘pop
up’ crate gardens and share their skills with their community.
We aim to inspire as many people as possible to make conscious and informed decisions about food and to grow fresh food right next to where they eat it.
By purchasing a crate garden, in addition to personally benefitting from a beautiful, healthy garden, you help us to create a crate garden on a large scale that will:
*** connect students with the environment with an outdoor classroom in an urban setting
*** understand where food comes from and how to grow it for themselves and their families
*** help supply food to the kitchen classes so the students can understand the ‘garden to plate’ concept
*** help students understand that half of household refuse could be used be used for compost instead of landfill.
We will do this by spending the money you give us on:
*** coir and vermiculite, to fill crates for our school garden
*** outdoor furniture so we can have classes in a green space
*** covering transport costs for the Compost Ninja pop up gardens
*** fencing
*** seed raising mix, seed and seedlings.
*** tools
*** art materials to beautify the garden space
*** worms
*** nets
The Nitty Gritty:
The crates that are available for sale are made by adult family members of the Compost Ninjas. The Compost Ninjas make their own crates too but these are for the school garden. We leave the money making to the grown-ups!
Crates will be available for collection from Collingwood College at the end of October.
