An artisan bakery with a difference
The Bread & Butter Project handcrafts artisan bread and pastry for food lovers throughout Sydney.
Look inside our wholesale bakery and you'll find working alongside our qualified artisan bakers a team of dedicated trainees from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds. Our trainees come from all over the globe from many countries including: Sierra Leone,
Sri Lanka, Burma and Iran.
We are Australia’s first social enterprise bakery which means 100% of our profits go towards improving the lives of those less privileged in our community. We pay our trainees to learn a new craft and study for an on-site TAFE qualification. They also
have their own personal English language tutor and receive social and career support from our in-house social worker. Our goal is to create pathways towards ongoing and sustainable employment for our trainees.
“My happiness has increased, it is good money and I have a family and friends with people from work. Everyone helps each other, my language has improved which helps with other things in life like getting my drivers licence. I am happy if I can help others
too.”
Our success so far
Since turning on the ovens two years ago we’ve had 100% of our trainees graduate with TAFE certificates and move into meaningful employment.
For example, our first two trainees Ma and Somprasong are now working as full-time professional bakers with The Bread & Butter Project. Chantelle our 3rd graduate is working with The Bathers Pavilion at Balmoral Beach. Aziz our 4th graduate is as an apprentice
baker with Aryzt. We have 5 trainees due to graduate in the next 6 months and with your support we have the capacity to take on a further 5-10 trainees over the next 12 months.
What your support means to us
We hope in the near future for our social enterprise to be 100% self sustaining. Right now our bread sales fund 90% of our training and support costs. We need your help to fund the rest!
Every little bit counts. Donations from $50 will help us provide trainee uniforms. Pledges of $100+ will fund some of the training costs like the one-on-one English language tutoring and career guidance. If you are able to commit $4000 or above you will
be covering the cost of a trainee for their full 15 month program - transforming the life of that trainee and the opportunities for their family for a succesful future in Australia.
All donations over $2 in Australia are tax deductible.
