Are you struggling to be your real self in a workplace dominated by men? Have you become ‘beige’ as a tactic to blend in? Are you afraid to draw attention to your womanhood because you think equality with men means sameness, not difference? Have you felt the challenges, obstacles or barriers were just too much?
Hi, I'm Jennifer, author, consultant, and advocate for women's rights and equality.
Author of Against the Wind, and mum to two beautiful adult daughters, Taylah and Chaeleigh.
Against the Wind is the story of my journey in the Australian military, overcoming discrimination, obstacles and challenges, to become an international gender expert working for NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation), the United Nations, and defence and security sector institutions around the world.
I wrote this book as a reflection on how my career in the Australian military was often 'against the wind', navigating uncharted waters as I found my way as a woman. But I drew strength from the many challenges I faced, not the least, a life changing event that stripped me of my innocence AND gave me clarity around my purpose - to serve and support other women.
This is a book for women who work in male-dominated professions, who struggle to achieve their full potential because of systemic barriers, culture and attitudes, and who want to find their 'voice'. This is for women who want to 'be what they can't see'.
Using a model that reflects this, I propose strategies that will empower women to step up, own their own space, use their voice, and be heard. Against the Wind is an informative, comprehensive and easy-to-follow journey from humble beginnings in the Navy, in which I encourage women to:
- Tackle the ‘firsts’ that still exist in their profession, say yes to opportunities and work out how later, and find and follow their passions
- Find their strengths, by being more self-aware, value their contribution, and say no to ‘imposter syndrome’
- Build their resilience through overcoming adversity and challenges, and find the silver lining
- Take new directions in their career and life, promote themselves unapologetically, and create their brand
- Think B.I.G – Brave & Important Goals, celebrate women that achieve the ‘firsts’, and find their voice
Becoming ‘what you can’t see’ and aspiring to more than conformity and sameness in the workplace, is more than achievable. It’s a necessity. For women, for businesses or organizations, and for social impact and change.
This is a book for women who want to empower themselves.
The Naval sword above, as also seen on the front cover of my book, is representative of the journey that led me to where I am today.
I wrote this book for all the women in my life, not the least my two daughters, and for whom I hope have a future that enables them to achieve their full potential and realise their dreams.
